Charities of the Year

Birchwood Colts are proud to announce that our chosen Charities of the Year are St Barnabas Hospice and Action Duchenne. St Barnabas Hospice provides vital compassionate care and support to individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses, while Action Duchenne is dedicated to improving the lives of those living with Duchenne muscular dystrophy through research, advocacy, and community support. By supporting these two incredible charities, we hope to raise awareness and funds that will make a real difference to those in need. Together, with the help of our players, families, and supporters, we can show the true spirit of the Birchwood Colts community and give back to causes that matter.

Chairmens Report

As we close another season at Birchwood Colts, it’s important to reflect on the challenges we have faced and the successes we have achieved together as a club.

This year saw the unexpected liquidation of Active Nation, which placed significant uncertainty on our ability to fulfil fixtures and maintain training schedules. Thanks to the swift and decisive action of the City of Lincoln Council, a clear plan was put in place, allowing us to continue operating with minimal disruption. We also extend our sincere gratitude to the Lincoln City Foundation, whose support was invaluable in keeping our football programme running during this difficult period. Our managers, coaches, and volunteers showed remarkable adaptability, making necessary adjustments to ensure our players could keep enjoying the game they love.

During the season, we also experienced health challenges affecting key members of our executive committee. These moments served as a strong reminder of the importance of succession planning and having cover for all vital roles within the club to ensure continuity, no matter the circumstances.

On a personal note, I (Simon) would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all parents, managers, coaches, and fellow committee members for your understanding and support following my recent sight loss. Your encouragement and willingness to help have allowed me to continue serving as Fixture Manager, Chairperson, and team manager — roles I am deeply passionate about.

It has also been a year of growth within our committee, with new roles developing to strengthen our operations: Laurie has taken on the website management with great success, Callum has stepped in as Chairperson’s Assistant and taken on the new role of Events Manager, and Adie Curcio has embraced the role of Tournament Manager. I would also like to give special thanks to Tracy, whose work as Treasurer has been instrumental in ensuring the club remains financially strong as we continue to grow.

We have also taken important steps towards developing our older players and providing them with a pathway into coaching. This season, Ben Irvine began coaching and was deservedly awarded Young Coach of the Year after helping with three teams — a remarkable achievement that shows his dedication and passion for the game. Other older players also contributed by refereeing at our tournament, further supporting the club and gaining valuable experience. Initiatives like these are vital in ensuring the continuity and long-term future of Birchwood Colts.

Speaking of tournaments, our annual event once again proved to be a highlight of the year. Despite the weather doing its best to dampen spirits, the resilience of our teams, volunteers, and visitors ensured that the tournament was a tremendous success, showcasing the community spirit that makes Birchwood Colts so special. Another highlight of the year was our presentation event, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all in attendance. Special thanks must go to Callum, who organised stalls for both events, and to Adie, Matt Cocking, Daniel Moore, Cliff, Mark, and Ben, who — along with our managers and coaches — gave their time and effort to ensure both occasions were a success.

On the pitch, our players delivered some incredible performances this season. Congratulations go to our Men’s Team and our U15 Colts, who were crowned league champions — with the U15 Colts going unbeaten all season. A special mention also to our U8 Bronchos, who lifted the cup in fantastic style, and to our U10 Chargers, who were honoured with the Mid Lincs Sporting Award for their exemplary attitude, teamwork, and sportsmanship. In addition, the Men’s Team also won the Sportsmanship Award for their outstanding conduct on and off the pitch — an honour shared with my own team, whose commitment to fair play and respect reflects the values at the heart of Birchwood Colts.

As we move forward, we look forward to building a strong and positive relationship with GLL, the new leisure centre management team, for the upcoming season, ensuring that our facilities and opportunities for players continue to grow.

In closing, I want to thank every single person who has contributed to our club this season. Your time, dedication, and passion are the heartbeat of Birchwood Colts, and together, we have shown that no challenge is too great when we stand as one team.

Here’s to building on this year’s foundations and looking forward to an even stronger season ahead.
